Finish Your Deck With Deck Fascia Boards

As you plan your deck project, you’ll need more than just decking and framing. DeckDirect has you and your substructure covered with composite and PVC exterior deck fascia boards. We carry TimberTech, Trex, and Fiberon fascia in a range of colors to match your decking perfectly.

What Are Fascia Boards?

A deck fascia board is the horizontal trim that covers the ends of decking boards and hides the substructure underneath, creating a smooth, finished look. Fascia boards also protect load-bearing joists and beams from water damage and pest infestations, which can cause structural damage over time.

We supply fascia boards made from recycled wood fiber and plastic composite with woodgrain finishes. Our offerings also include PVC boards made entirely of synthetic material. Unlike wood, which is prone to warping and insect damage, composite and PVC absorb less moisture and resist infestations.

How Long Do Composite and PVC Exterior Fascia Boards Last?

Traditional wood fascia generally lasts up to about 15 years if you clean, stain, and seal it regularly. Composite and PVC deck fascia boards, however, can last as long as 50 years and only require occasional cleaning with soap and water.

DeckDirect’s composite and PVC fascia boards continue to look great over the years because they are designed to resist deterioration from rot, mold, mildew, and insects, and they don’t splinter or crack like wood does. Additionally, these materials don’t fade or discolor under constant UV exposure as wood does.

Best Installation Practices for Deck Fascia Boards

Exterior composite and PVC fascia boards, while low-maintenance, have specific installation techniques that accommodate their unique properties, especially thermal expansion and contraction:

  1. Pre-drill fastener holes with a bit that is slightly larger than the fastener shank to allow thermal movement
  2. Use corrosion-resistant, color-matched screws intended for composite or PVC
  3. Leave a little space between the fascia and the rim joint to encourage airflow
  4. Leave small gaps between the fascia boards as well, and don’t overtighten screws
  5. Install fascia in moderate temperatures to minimize thermal movement for a more accurate fit

Use these techniques, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent future issues such as warping, buckling, or detachment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Deck Fascia Boards

Decking projects can be confusing if you don’t understand the elements involved. Here are some FAQs about deck fascia boards and why you need them.

Why is deck fascia important?

Exterior fascia boards cover the exposed edges of a deck, giving it a finished look while protecting load-bearing components from moisture and damage. They also help prevent pests and debris from collecting under the deck and reduce exposure to the elements.

Do composite and PVC fascia boards require maintenance?

Yes. However, unlike wood, which needs regular staining and sealing, composite and PVC fascia only need to be cleaned with soap and water about twice a year. Keeping fascia free of dirt and debris helps prevent discoloration and damage.

Should I install fascia boards before or after decking?

Deck fascia boards typically go in after the decking is in place to make sure they’re lined up correctly and cover the deck’s perimeter. Installing fascia first can make it harder to adjust the deck boards and may lead to misalignment. However, always follow manufacturer guidelines for best results.
